Feeding the Guests

A week of free food and drink!

Duke Ludwig ordered that during the wedding week no innkeeper was to take money for food or drink. Eveyone was to get his rations from the “Dukes Kitchen” which was set up in the Steckengasse (An alley in the heart of the town.). No butcher, baker or fishmonger was to “offer his goods for sale.” Outside the public kitchens vats of wine were set up. Red wine and white wine.” And whoever came and wanted wine, was given a measure and a loaf of bread, be it early or late in the day. ”The upper classes however had their own provisions delivered to their quarters where their own cooks prepared their food. These were paid from the the Dukes treasury. There were 146 cooks!
